public, coeducational institution of higher learning in Chicago, Ill., U.S. It offers bachelor's degree programs in nursing and allied health professions, business, education, arts, and sciences. Master's degree programs are also available in education and in arts and sciences. Notable facilities on campus include an electron microscopy laboratory and an art gallery. The university was established in 1867 as an experimental teacher-training school. It is one of five institutions governed by the Illinois Board of Governors of State Colleges and Universities.
